NHC 108
SLEEP & EXERCISE

Overview

The NHC108 Sleep and Exercise Course investigates all essential aspects of Sleep and Exercise.

It is clear that exercise and sleep, movement and rest, activity and relaxation are opposites, but also complementary and synergistic with each other. All can be accomplished in many different ways, and all are necessary in a balanced, high-energy lifestyle.

Each of us may have somewhat differing needs for the various forms of sleep and exercise. This will reflect the different circumstances in our lives, differences in biological and metabolic functioning among different people, and different mental and emotional attitudes toward work and play each day.

Sleep is essential to well-being. Nutrition and health are dependent upon adequate sleep, and well-being suffers if any link in the health chain, including sleep, is not up to par.

Because many health problems arise due to inadequate or poor quality sleep, we must turn our attention to them by determining their roles, assuring their adequacy and enhancing their quality.

An understanding of the conditions that insure deep sleep is essential to obtaining optimal benefits from sleep. It is also necessary to become aware of the ends served by sleep so that we are better able to restructure our life habits in alignment.

Dreams are given attention because everyone has them! We look at the various roles ascribed to dreams by many different theories.

During sleep, many intricate detoxification functions and maintenance duties occur in the brain and central nervous system. The importance of these functions are examined. And how sleep, rest, and relaxation each have their own roles in your daily healthful living practice.

Adequate amounts of activity, and inactivity, are essential components of healthful living. Play, recreation, and exercise can be lots of fun, and become an enjoyable daily activity. Complete health cannot be maintained without them.

In order for all bodily systems to function effectively, it is necessary to cultivate a good balance of nutrition, activity and inactivity. These are the three pillars of active healthful living in the physical realm.

When this is achieved, along with the other conditions of health, well being and joyful living are attained and maintained.
